چکیده

We have developed a theory which for the first time predicts the efficiency of type-I second-harmonic generation (SHG) with simultaneous spatial and temporal walk-offs and with pump depletion. In order to validate our theory, we have compared its predictions with a numerical solver. We also have measured the conversion efficiency for type-I SHG in experiments with 120–fs laser pulses in BBO and LBO crystals long enough that both temporal and spatial walk-off are important. Comparison supports our theoretical analysis. Our theory provides a useful tool for estimating SHG efficiency with pulsed sources in both nondepletion and depletion regions.

Femtosecond second-harmonic generation in periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides with simultaneous strong pump depletion and group-velocity walk-off

We report studies of second-harmonic generation (SHG) of femtosecond pulses in long periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides under large conversion conditions. Strong saturation of the SHG efficiency was observed, accompanied by spectral and temporal distortion of the pump pulse. Our simulation studies suggest that the pulse distortions may be caused by the interaction of the phase-matched...

Observation of optical vortex streets in walking second-harmonic generation.

We report what is believed to be the first experimental observation of spontaneous nucleation of arrays of optical vortices in the process of second-harmonic generation in a crystal with moderate Poynting vector walk-off, pumped with focused beams containing screw phase dislocations. Our experiments were conducted in lithium triborate under conditions of small-efficiency second-harmonic generat...

Attosecond pulse walk-off in high-order harmonic generation.

We study the influence of the generation conditions on the group delay of attosecond pulses in high-order harmonic generation in gases. The group delay relative to the fundamental field is found to decrease with increasing gas pressure in the generation cell, reflecting a temporal walk-off due to the dispersive properties of the nonlinear medium. This effect is well reproduced using an on-axis ...

Giant narrowband twin-beam generation along the pump-energy propagation direction

Walk-off effects, originating from the difference between the group and phase velocities, limit the efficiency of nonlinear optical interactions. While transverse walk-off can be eliminated by proper medium engineering, longitudinal walk-off is harder to avoid. In particular, ultrafast twin-beam generation via pulsed parametric down-conversion and four-wave mixing is only possible in short crys...

Walk-Off-Induced Modulation Instability, Temporal Pattern Formation, and Frequency Comb Generation in Cavity-Enhanced Second-Harmonic Generation.

We derive a time-domain mean-field equation to model the full temporal and spectral dynamics of light in singly resonant cavity-enhanced second-harmonic generation systems. We show that the temporal walk-off between the fundamental and the second-harmonic fields plays a decisive role under realistic conditions, giving rise to rich, previously unidentified nonlinear behavior. Through linear stab...
